If you are a Christian without considering yourself a sports fan, there’s a name you need to familiarize yourself with: Tim Tebow. Thrust into the role of starting quarterback for the NFL’s Denver Broncos, Tim has captured the national spotlight because of three prominent features of his life: First of all, his skills as a quarterback are unconventional and not overly impressive compared to his peers in the NFL. Secondly, he has displayed an uncanny ability to keep winning football games when it would appear that there is zero chance of securing the victory. Finally, Tebow is a devout – and I mean DEEEEEVOUT – Christian who is often seen kneeling on the sidelines in prayer and giving God the glory each time his team defeats their opponent.
Case in point: yesterday the Broncos were losing 10-0 with 2 minutes left in the game. Enter Tim Tebow. A short time later, after leading his team to another improbable victory, the cameras caught the young man pointing towards Heaven giving the Lord the praise. What an incredible boost for those of us who have been waiting for a fit representative of Christ to be placed before the eyes of our nation. Of course, he has been mocked by other players in the league; after being sacked by an opposing player, the player knelt down in front of Tebow and mimicked his prayer stance as if to say, “god just let me tackle you, punk. Let me give him the praise.” I wonder what would have happened if it was a Muslim or Jewish quarterback who had been mocked that day? Yet, we all know that Christians are fair game while the interests of other religions are protected with fury and fervor. To his credit, Tebow always takes the high road and seeks to find something gracious to say each time he finds himself as the bullseye of an intolerant culture.
Listen to the clip below and hear Tebow respond to a request that he tone down his faith a little and just focus on being an athlete. May we learn from his gracious response. Also, from time to time it may be wise to pray for our brother. He is being viewed as a representative our the disciples of Jesus Christ and will certainly be a target for the enemy. Something tells me that when that occurs, Tebow will be able to escape the tackle, protect the ball and make his way into the end zone for another victory.
Again, I do so admire how simply he shares Jesus and leaves naysayers with egg on their face!
What a wonderful Human ICON! (Is that a good phrase?) I do so admire anyone, famous or just a regular person with the ability to telling anyone and everyone about how GREAT IS OUR JESUS CHRIST.
im a huge tebow fan-im a buffalo bills fan and ive had to endure year after year of losing teams-“like the jews being led through the desert with moses”-hoping for the promised land(super bowl) haha–i was praying we would take him but of course they didnt because “everyone” said he couldnt get it done-the same as david “couldnt “defeat goliath-to me if there is a clear cut example of the Lord working through someone its him. I think he is going to get many people saved in the league and there will always be those against him but i think thats the evil in them that cant stand to be around him–His goodness exposes many peoples darkness
