Before there was a visible you there was a reason for you. Many people never consider that their origin is not located in the collision of sperm and ovum but in the infinite determination of the Creator. Before a person is ever a physical reality he or she is an expression of God’s perfect desire and only deposited into time and space at the precise moment that He deems perfect. Prior to there being an actual you, there was an intentional you. You are a visible manifestation of something God has determined to do which means that you have purpose.
Isaiah 44:2 – Thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you…”
Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Galatians 1:15-16 – “But when He who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I…”
I’m not going to pull back the curtain to reveal to you the specific components of the reason why you are here today. Why I will not do this is because I have no clue concerning the specific parts which reveal the Why behind your life. There is, however, one very large umbrella purpose that is over each of us and it is this: you were created by God for His own glory. This means that God designed you with the full intention of reflecting something of His greatness throughout your earthly life and also throughout what lies beyond your expiration date. This mission of His will not be thwarted as He cannot fail to receive the final glory from our lives. The question of how that is specifically achieved reveals the arena of your individual purpose in life – the real question is not Why but How. You have been precisely created by Him with the determined DNA, the appropriate nationality, the allotted generation, with the exact gifts and abilities, the appropriate flaws and weaknesses and the predetermined intellectual capacity. None of these attributes of your life resulted by chance. These elements which comprise your life, along with a host of others, are chosen threads that God has gathered to weave together so that the end result is a purposed strand in His own tapestry for the ages. I’m not overselling this, friend. God did not randomly make you and drop you off on planet earth. He has intended you. There’s a valid reason for you being here.
Have you uncovered it?
All I’m seeking to do today is to get you to slow down and engage that mind of yours. Who are you? You are more than your beauty or lack of it. Your race, gender, family and social status are a part of who you are but not the sum total. Each joyful blessing and every agonizing dagger in your history was not meant to fully define you but, rather, serve as pieces of the greater whole. One chapter in your life – whether pleasant or unpleasant – is not the whole script. You are not your job. You are not your wealth. You are not your image because you are not limited to the role you play in the lives of others. Perhaps you are a mother or grandmother, but that is not all that you are. It may be that you have been divorced yet this is not the comprehensive definition of who you are nor of what you are to be from today onward. The three verses I shared above were all written by preachers but their full identity was not limited to their visible activity. The error that many of us make is that we associate our identities with our activities while ignoring that our activities change constantly and completely cease at various points along the way. Who you are – the intentional you – must be found in the One who originated that intention. Here’s what I want you to hear: the details of the reason for your life all trace themselves back to the God who formed you. You are created to know God, rejoice in Him above all, and to make Him known. The details of your life are the vehicle through which you express this grand purpose. This is why it is unspeakably liberating to live a life consecrated to God! You can dig ditches and be fulfilling your purpose of knowing Him, rejoicing in Him and making Him known. Wealthy and poor alike can know Him, rejoice in Him and make Him known. Asians and Africans, Spaniards and Samoans, Canadians and Chinese can all equally experience the unmitigated thrill of finding their purpose in Him and then proactively living it out. You see, the context of where you are in life need not eclipse the reality of why you are. In Jesus Christ we are given the full victory and overcoming nature of God Himself. It is an unparallelled thrill to know that you posses final victory. The lesser components of your life cannot swallow up the greater purpose given to you by God Himself. Realize with me that God’s purpose for you on earth is the exact same purpose He has for eternity: knowing Him, rejoicing in Him and proclaiming what w ehave been made to know of Him. The essence of God’s purpose in Heaven and earth is, simply defined, Worship. Slow down…allow for time to consider this…and start pondering how you might rethink the remainder of your days.
Your purpose is not yet complete. I know this because you are still here. Yesterday’s regrets and failures cannot stop the purpose of God for you. Future fears and challenges need not lead you to believe that you are destined to miss His very best. You were made for His glory which is the wellspring of your deepest satisfaction in life. The empty spot, the something-is-missing sensation, the inner void that has been with some of you for so long – these are all evidences that He is still calling you unto Himself. He intends for you to know Him, rejoice in Him and to make Him known. This is His purpose in creating all of us. This is His purpose for you and me.
