The most accessible biblical answer to the question, “What is God doing in the world today?” can be found in Revelation 21:5 when the One seated upon Heaven’s throne declares, “Behold, I am making all things new.” God is renewing the cosmos. Human sin had an impact on the entire created order. Along with Lucifer’s rebellion and being cast down to earth, Adam and Eve’s fall in Eden’s garden shattered the perfection on earth that God had established. From those very moments, God has been engaging in a process of renewal. His most costly investment in this process is the act of redemption whereby the Father slew His son as the sacrifice for humankind’s sin. In the act of salvation, God makes what is old and dead through sin to become new and alive through grace. This is an activity of God which has not stopped since He first wrapped those animal skins around Adam and Eve to provide for their atonement and to cover their shame. He is still forgiving, saving and delivering people from their sin.
But, beyond the activity of saving the souls of humans, what else is God doing? To understand this, we need to take a peek at a short passage in the back of our bibles that describes an event that has not yet taken place.
“Let us rejoice and exult and give Him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure – for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” – Revelation 19:7-9
While God is non-stop in the ongoing work of redeeming lost souls through His son, we also must emphasize that there is a simultaneous work from God which is preparing those people who are already redeemed to meet the Bridegroom, Jesus. Yes, God is always working on us as a collective group of redeemed saints. In this era of grace, we are usually referred to as the Church – a group of people who have been individually called out of sin and into relationship with Jesus. In the age to come, we will live as one in the revelation that we are the Bride of Christ. One day in eternity future, the Father will present the Son with His everlasting bride. Before this marriage occurs, God is actively working to purify the Bride so that she is fit to be presented to her Bridegroom. The Apostle Paul writes of this present work from God in Ephesians 5:26-27, “So that He might sanctify her, having cleansed herby the washing of water with the word, so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”
To summarize what I have written thus far, here are components of what God is doing today:
- God is proactively working to save lost souls
- God is preparing the church as a Bride for a wedding in Heaven
- God is sanctifying, cleaning and making the Bride holy and beautiful for His son, Jesus.
Those are broad categories of the Father’s activity, for sure. Let me take a moment to unpack what I see as evidence of this activity that is occurring right now in countless places.
The Father is purifying the Church theologically. Human traditions, standards, doctrines and practices are being toppled. God has waged war on christianized religion. Denominational flags are being lowered while Bible-Truth flags are being raised. This generation wants to know what is true, and they are willing to enter into reformation of the Church in order to re-establish truth to its proper place. Because of this, much separation is happening in the Church. Both liberal and legalistic approaches to Christianity are digging in their heels and refusing to budge on their most cherished issues. Many of those issues are theological, but they have intense relational, social, cultural and political ramifications. The visible little-c church is being separated out of the holy big-C Church. The Father is facilitating events that are meant to bring us to a decision about how committed we are to Jesus. He is forcing the Church to answer the question, “What is TRUE?”
The Father is releasing the presence and power of Holy Spirit in undeniable, visible ways. As the Father purifies the Church theologically, He is also awakening long-dormant sections of the church to the reality of God the Spirit. Holy Spirit is rebirthing and rebaptizing the Church in love and power. He is releasing the very love of Jesus into the Church. Forgiveness, reconciliation, repentance and restoration is happening. Christians are laying down their swords. We are being empowered in fresh and new ways to love people, even as we maintain our uncompromised loyalty to King Jesus. The compromise that has dimmed and dulled the Church in the Western Hemisphere is being aggressively remedied by the presence and activity of Holy Spirit. We are seeing a global increase in wisdom, power and love among Jesus-followers of every stripe. If the Church will humbly, wisely and devotedly steward this beginning of a new outpouring of Holy Spirit, revival will find us all over the planet.
Lastly, the Father is summoning the Bride unto deep, lasting holiness. The world system is promoting sin and vice at levels we have not seen in our lifetime. Sexual perversion now has unlimited ability to spread its message and practices. The culture has grown numb to sin. Presently, the only really outrageous sin is to actually call sin sin. The Church has grown increasingly silent over the last sixty years in America about sin. What we see happening now is that Christians are not going to be moving back and forth across the dividing line of what is morally right. God is washing His people with the waters of both Word and Spirit. Because of the revelation that He is releasing concerning the urgent need for us to hold to our bibles and our need for Holy Spirit, the Church is returning to the same paradigm that authenticated and empowered the first-century Church. Those believers held to Apostolic doctrine and the power of Holy Spirit, and nearly nothing else. As we humble ourselves to our own generational need of these two things, we will experience a purging of sin from our ranks, an elevated desire for purity in our individual hearts, a piercing conviction of any compromise in our lives and, ultimately, quick and genuine repentance before the throne of God.
These three categories are large chunks of what I see God doing today. My hope is that you will bring this ten-thousand-foot view down the practical level of considering your own heart. How are you complying with what God is doing in the world right now? If we are doing something different, independently of what God is actually doing, then we are moving in the wrong direction. Cooperating with the evangelizing of lost souls, facilitating the maturing and purifying of the Church by investing our lives on some level, and personally pursuing deep holiness of attitude/activity is part of the call of God on each of our lives.
There is a wedding in Heaven being planned. God is making all things new, preparing His people to be walked down the aisle unto Jesus, the Bridegroom.
